![]() Opposite the steel and wood element are the elevators, clad in another wood to bring warmth and balance to the space. The wood slats use the same Wisconsin Urban Wood installed in the units. The lobby features a large steel and wood element to shield the mailboxes from the main thoroughfare. The main lobby connects the Erie Street front to the Milwaukee Riverwalk, the transparency permits residents to enter through the street front or the river front. The existing vernacular of the industrial warehouse exterior allowed the lobby finishes to follow the same language with exposed structural columns, natural wood elements, and steel features. The design had to achieve a refined experience from the building’s front lobby to the inside of the units so luxury living can be felt throughout all spaces in the building. The location of DoMUS allows residents to engage in the multifaceted Third Ward community. The residents of DoMUS have amenities that include a club room, a fitness club, and direct access to Milwaukee’s Riverwalk unlike any other housing property. The apartment units, on levels two through six, showcase luxury, high-end finishes and features creating an experience of high quality living. On the first level, two retail tenants occupy the east and west corner. The long, narrow, and slightly bent plot of land is a part of a series of block-long WWI-era renovated mixed-use warehouses. The different apartments offer, despite their relatively small area of between 40 and 60 m2, a high level of spaciousness. the diverse shared facilities and spaces stimulate social interactions between residents and make it possible to create more compact apartments. the roof pavilion, which is accessed by a pedestrian bridge in between two blocks, contains a large kitchen studio and a guestroom for all inhabitants to make use of. the garden room opens towards the collective green court and consists of a variety of interconnected spaces for working, playing, relaxing, washing, eating, and drinking. the blocks are visually separated and physically connected by the communal circulation space that links all housing units and also connects an array of shared spaces and amenities.Įach inhabitant of domūs houthaven gets access to a large multifunctional garden room on the first floor and a pavilion with a roof terrace on the fifth floor. each volume has a brick grid façade that merges solidity and transparency in a way that optimizes views, light, and privacy for the specific apartment typology inside. the choice of sturdy brick volumes with generous façade openings and ‘no-nonsense details’ refers to the industrial character of the harbor area. In order to emphasize the unity between the parts, all blocks share the same architectural DNA. this facilitates identification by the inhabitants, and fits with the masterplan’s ambition to break down the superblock into a smaller ‘urban grain size’. all the blocks have their own specific housing typology, constructive system, façade grid, and color.
